Because Uganda is in Africa And Middle East, transit countries on the way can impose extra live-animal rules even when the destination file looks straightforward. Specific Requirements and Documents1. Veterinary Health Certificate:

• Issued within 48 hours prior to departure.

• Must be completed by a licensed veterinarian and endorsed by the competent authority in the country of origin.

• Includes confirmation of clinical examination and good health of the animal.

• Rabies Vaccination Certificate:

• The animal must be vaccinated against Rabies and accompanied by a Rabies vaccination certificate issued by the state veterinary administration of the country of origin.

• Disease-Free Declaration:

• The pet must be free from Rabies, Canine Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, Coronavirus, Rotavirus, Adenovirus Type 2, and Bordetella.

• Parasite Treatments:

• The pet must be free from in ternal and external parasites, as confirmed in the Veterinary Health Certificate.

• Copy of Import Permit:

• A copy of the Veterinary Import Permit must accompany the consignment.

• Notification:

• The importer must notify the Commissioner of Animal Health of the expected arrival time at the port of entry via email, fax, or telephone.

Animal Quota per Importer

• Uganda does not specify a limit on the number of pets allowed per owner or importer. This may vary depending on in dividual permits and is subject to confirmation with Ugandan authorities.

Different Requirements for Different Countries

• While the requirements are generally consistent, specific details or additional measures may depend on the health and disease conditions in the exporting or transit countries. These are subject to the discretion of Uganda's Commissioner of Animal Health.

In Uganda, all pets entering the country are classified as a commercial move

Uganda has not published any special requirements or restrictions based on the exporting country, in cluding those at war, high-risk for rabies, or countries from which animals cannot be imported. However, all pets must meet the standard requirements, in cluding a Veterinary Import Permit, a valid Rabies vaccination certificate, and compliance with health and transport guidelines. It is advisable to consult with Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries for updates or specific cases.

All pets entering Uganda must comply with IATA Live Animal Regulations to ensure their safe and humane transport. This in cludes appropriate crate size, ventilation, and secure locking mechanisms suitable for the pet’s size and species. These regulations ensure the welfare of the animal during transit and are mandatory for all pets entering the country.

The Commissioner Animal Health should be notified by the importer, the expected time of arrival at the destination port of entry.

On arrival the veterinary in spector on duty should be notified since pet will not be released without his/her examination and written permission.

Identification and microchip

Microchipping is not mandatory to enter uganda however it is recommended and ISO STANDARD 11784/11785 IS RECOMMENDED.

Rabies and vaccinations

Yes, Rabies vaccination is required for pets entering Uganda. However, there are no published guidelines specifying a waiting period after vaccination before entry Rabies. Rabies vaccination must not be less than 30 days from time of vaccination and should not be more than 12 months. PETS VACCINATTED WITH A THREE YEAR VACCINE FROM ABROAD ARE ACCEPTED The Rabies vaccine must not be older than 1 year at the time of entry. Regarding the type of Rabies vaccine allowed, the specific type is not explicitly published in the regulations. There are no additional restrictions outlined for Rabies vaccinations beyond these requirements. Puppies below three months can travel on dam’s rabies vaccination records provided the mother had a valid rabies vaccination records before giving birth.

Dogs entering Uganda must be vaccinated against the following diseases:

• Canine Distemper

• Canine Hepatitis

• Canine Parainfluenza

• Canine Leptospirosis

• Canine Parvovirus

Additionally, the dog must be free from:

• Canine Coronavirus

• Rotavirus

• Adenovirus Type 2

• Bordetella

Cats entering Uganda must be vaccinated against:

• Rabies

• Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR)

• Calicivirus (FCV)

• Feline Panleukopenia (FPV)

(Note: This is often administered as a combination "FVRCP" vaccine.)

For both dogs and cats, the required vaccinations must not be older than one year at the time of entry into Uganda. All vaccinations must be documented in a valid health certificate issued and endorsed by a competent veterinary authority within 48 hours of departure.

It is also advisable to ensure pets are in good health and meet all other entry requirements before traveling.

Tests and treatments

Uganda has not published any specific test requirements for pets entering the country. Therefore, there are no tests that must be performed before entry, no timelines for when tests should be conducted, and no expiration periods for test results.

Health certificate and permits

For pets traveling to Uganda, a Veterinary Health Certificate must be issued within 48 hours before embarkation. This certificate can be completed by a licensed veterinarian in the country of origin, but it must be endorsed by the competent authority of the country of origin to be valid.

Uganda has not published a specific health certificate template or format for pet importation. The certificate should in clude all relevant health details of the pet, such as vaccination records, treatments (in ternal and external parasites), microchip in formation, and a declaration of good health.

While Uganda does not provide a specific form, you may use the standard health certificate template commonly used in your country. Consult your local veterinary authority or the competent government agency to ensure compliance with both the exporting and importing requirements. For pets entering Uganda, an import permit is a mandatory requirement. The country’s equatorial tropical climate is generally favorable for dog transport, avoiding extreme weather conditions. However, it is always advisable to ensure pets are transported in a manner that prioritizes their comfort and safety during travel.

3.Katuna Boarder Post, it crosses between uganda and Rwanda and its called Gatuna in Rwanda. It is located in kabaale district south western uganda on the frontier with Rwanda. 4.Nimule Boarder Post, Elegu-Nimule crossing is a major in ternational border point linking Uganda with South Sudan. It is in Magwi county, Eastern Equatorial State. It operates as a one Stop Border Post to facilitate customs and immigration clearance for people and goods.

Process for Pets Entering Uganda:1. Entry Mode:

• All pets must enter Uganda as cargo; pets cannot travel in-cabin or as baggage.

• Pets arriving on weekends will still be cleared, as both Customs and the State Vet are on duty 24/7. There is no need to reschedule arrivals to weekdays.
• Appointments:

• There is no requirement to call ahead or schedule an appointment for pet arrivals, but it is advisable to inform your licensed customs agent in advance for smoother processing.

Other pets / CITES / extra rules

For CITES-listed species entering Uganda, both a CITES import permit and a CITES export permit are required. These permits must be obtained from the relevant CITES authorities in the exporting country and from Uganda's Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, which is responsible for issuing CITES permits. Ensure all documentation is complete and accompany the animal during travel to comply with CITES regulations.

Uganda has not published specific import requirements or restrictions for pets other than dogs and cats. Animal health and welfare

Animals must be transported in a way that minimizes stress and in juries with proper handling to avoid herm.

Journey time and rest periods

No animal may be transported for 8 hours without a rest stop where they are fed and watered.

Before transportation, animals must undergo veterinary in spection to ensure that they meet health standards.
