The detail

Sudan, of ficially the Republic of the Sudan, is a country in Northeast Africa. Because Sudan is in Africa And Middle East, transit countries on the way can impose extra live-animal rules even when the destination file looks straightforward.

Import requirements

In the case of Puppies/Kittens, the import age is stated as being 12 weeks because this is the earliest age that they can be given its first Rabies vaccination.

However, the puppy/kitten is allowed to travel on the mother’s vaccination records for pups younger than 12 weeks, provided that they are valid and up to date.

Terms and Conditions

No canine or feline animal shall be imported into Sudan from any country unless accompanied by an in ternational veterinary certificate attesting that the animal:

• Showed no clinical sign of rabies on the day of shipment.
• Were kept since birth or for the 6 months prior to shipment in a rabies free country as defined in the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Terrestrial Animal Health Code OR satisfy the following stipulations.
• Showed no clinical sign of rabies within 48 hours of shipment; AND EITHER
• Were identified by a permanent mark (such as a microchip) and their identification number shall be stated in the certificate or had any other adequate identification.
• Were vaccinated against rabies: -

Not less than 6 months and not more than one year prior to shipment in the case of a primary vaccination or which should have been carried out when the animals were at least 3 months old.

The Rabies vaccination must Not be more than one year prior to shipment in the case of a booster vaccination.

Vaccination With an in activated virus vaccine or with a recombinant vaccine expressing the rabies virus glycoprotein and were subjected not less than 3 months and not more than 24 months prior to shipment to an antibody test as prescribed in the OIE Terrestrial Manual with a positive result equivalent to at least 0.5 IU/ml Animals that do not meet above requirements, in such cases, the Sudan authorities may require the placing of the animals in a quarantine station located on in the country for up to six months at the cost of the owner of the animal.

• Is clinically free of symptoms of any other contagious and in fectious disease and in ternal and external parasites, the certificate being dated not more than 48 hours before embarkation.

This import permit shall be valid for a maximum of ninety days and shall only be for one consignment only.

This import permit shall accompany the animal during importation.

Animals entering Sudan should travel as Manifest Cargo and use the Freight Compartment of the aircraft. Arrangements to have the animal travel in the passenger cabin shall be at the discretion of the airline provided that it passes through the animal holding station for in spection.

Puppies and kittens which are aged 3 months and below will be allowed to travel on the mothers’ vaccination records

All pets entering Sudan are considered commercial.

Sudan has not published variations requirements due to origin

Identification and microchip

Pet must be microchipped with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant pet microchip that is 15 digit and non-encrypted. If not compliant, bring your own microchip scanner that is compatible. (This requirement can be waived for pets entering from rabies free countries where your pet was born in or has resided for a minimum of 6 months.) The microchip number should be stated in the vaccination booklet/certificate and on the in ternational health certificate.

Rabies and vaccinations

Must be vaccinated against rabies:

a) not less than 30 days and not more than one year prior to shipment in the case of a primary vaccination, which should have been carried out when the animal were at least 3 months old.

b) not more than one year prior to shipment in the case of a booster vaccination.

c) with an in activated virus vaccine or with a recombinant vaccine expressing the rabies virus glycoprotein.

If your dog or cat was vaccinated against rabies less than six months prior to arrival in Sudan, it must also be accompanied by a certificate signed by a Government Veterinary Officer of the country of origin stating that there has been no case of rabies within 30 miles of the place of origin of the animal within the preceding the six months.

Sudan doesn’t recognize 3 years Living Avianized vaccine.

Dogs: Rabies, Canine Distemper-Adenovirus, Hepatitis, Type 2-Parainfluenza-Parvovirus Vaccine, Leptospiracanicola-icterohaemorrahagiae Bacterin, and Parvovirus

Cats: Rabies and Feline Rhinotracheitis-Calicivirus -Panleukopenia

Tests and treatments

Were subjected not less than 3 months and not more than 24 months prior to shipment to an antibody test as prescribed in the OIE (WOAH)

Not more than 48 hours before your pet’s flight, you should treat your pet against in ternal and external parasites.

Health certificate and permits

Pets entering Sudan should be accompanied by an in ternational veterinary health certificate endorsed by the relevant authorities in the country of origin. The health certificate should be done no more than 5 days prior to the pet’s departure. Please note that the original certificate should accompany the animal.

• All other animals are classified as “Domestic” or “Wildlife”.

FOR US: Accredited Veterinarians can submit health certificates for USDA endorsement electronically through VEHCS (Veterinary Export Health Certification System).

However, this country requires USDA to ink-sign and emboss the health certificate. This means the final, endorsed health certificate that travels with the animal(s) must be mailed back.

*Sudan has not published a template Health certificate. Health certificate must be issued by origin vet and endorsed by state vet. The health certificate must show pet/owners Biodata, stating animal is healthy and free of contagious diseases, Rabies vaccination is up to date and fit to fly.*

An import permit, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture in Sudan, is required for all pets coming into Sudan. Issuing the import permit takes about 2-14 working days. Once issued, the import permit is valid for 90 days and only for one consignment.

In order to obtain an Import Permit, the following documents are required:

• Requirements for obtaining an Import Permit are:

• To import a dog or cat into Sudan we require the following:

• A formal letter from the pet owner requesting a permit.

• A certified copy of the pet owner’s passport

• Current Health Certificate from a Veterinary doctor

• A vaccination card of the pet (rabies) signed by a Veterinary doctor

• Processing time 2-14 days

Quarantine

The animal is accompanied by a valid Rabies vaccination certificate stating:

The type; manufacturer and Batch No. of the vaccine; the apparent age of the animal at the time of vaccination; the date of vaccination

Animals vaccinated against Rabies less than six months prior to arrival in Sudan must also be accompanied by a certificate signed by a Government Veterinary Officer of Israel stating that there has been no case of Rabies within 30 miles of the place of origin of the animal within the preceding six months.

Any animal arriving in Sudan without the above stated certificates will be kept in quarantine, at the expenses of the owner, for up to six months. Animals in transit for less than 48 hours need not have certificates as per the above paragraph. But will be kept in isolation, at the owner’s expense, during this period. Such animals will only be allowed to leave Sudan by air or sea.

The arrival of any animal entering Sudan other than by sea at the Port of Mombasa or by air at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi must be reported to the nearest Veterinary Office within three (3) days of arrival.

Restrictions and banned breeds

Sudan has not published a list of banned breeds

No canine or feline animal shall be imported into Sudan from any country unless:

(a) The animal is accompanied by the certificate of a veterinary surgeon, signed not more than five days prior to the date of departure from the country of origin, certifying that the animal is free from clinical symptoms of any contagious or in fectious disease.

(b)(i) The animal is accompanied by a valid Rabies vaccination certificate stating-

the type, manufacturer and Batch No. of the vaccine.

the apparent age of the animal at the time of vaccination.

(b)(ii) Animals vaccinated against Rabies less than six months prior to arrival in Sudan must also be accompanied by a certificate signed by a Government Veterinary Officer of the country of origin stating that there has been no case of Rabies within 30 miles of the place of origin of the animal within the preceding six months.

(c) The animal is accompanied by a certificate from the Captain of the ship or aircraft in which the animal travelled to Sudan certifying that the animal has not left the craft between the place of embarkation and the place of entry into Sudan, and has been isolated from all other canine and feline animals throughout the journey.

Any animal arriving into Sudan without the certificates stated above will be returned back to origin or kept in quarantine, at the expenses of the owner, for up to six months with the exception that:

(b) animals in transit for less than 48 hours need to have transit permit. Such animals will only be allowed to leave Sudan by air or sea.

The arrival of any animal entering Kenya other than by sea at Mombasa or by air at Nairobi must be reported to the nearest veterinary office within three days of arrival.

Validity of Rabies Vaccines – A certificate of Rabies vaccination is valid for all canines which are over the age of six months at vaccination and for all felines which are over the age of four months at vaccination, for the period specified, providing that one of the following approved vaccines has been used:

a) Phenolized (in activated) vaccine:

Canines and felines: One month to 12 months, post vaccination.

b) Living Avianized vaccine (Flury or Kelev strain)

Canines: One month to 12 months, post vaccination.

Felines: One month to 12 months, post vaccination

Pets entering Sudan should do so through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) and only as manifest cargo (with an airway bill).

You can’t bring your pet into Kenya in-cabin or even as excess luggage.

Sending a pet as manifest cargo means that the pet is flying “unaccompanied”. Even if the owner is on the same flight, the pet’s ticket (airway bill) isn’t connected in any way to the owner’s ticket.

• the customs clearance process then takes a further 1 to 1.5 hours.

• Original Health Certificate – This is valid for not more than 48hrs after issue and is issued by a competent/authorized local vet once the health check is completed.

An Export permit / International Health Certificate is required for All pets moving from Kenya and is valid for 2 weeks from date of approval. It can take up to 2 working days to obtain the approved Export Permit

All the import requirements of the destination should be met prior to export.

Other pets / CITES / extra rules

Cites Export and Import Permit must be issued, and in spection carried out by Department of Wildlife prior to departure of the animals.
