Pet import requirements for Vietnam

The order matters more than the effort: a rabies vaccination given before the microchip was implanted does not count in most regimes, and a titer test drawn too early restarts a waiting period. For Vietnam, start with this checkpoint: cats and Dogs must be at least 4 months. Import requirements

Cats and Dogs must be at least 4 months

Required documents for import

  • Scanned copy of the pet owner’s passport (photo page)
  • Scanned copy of the pet owner’s work permit, temporary residence card or Vietnamese visa
  • Original pet vaccination book with vaccine records (pages showing pet’s name, breed, date of birth, gender & rabies vaccination records which are more than 30 days and less than one year prior to entry in Vietnam)
  • Original Health Certificate issued by the government animal health department (not by the pet clinic or private vet) at origin country
  • Original Air Waybill (MAWB) issued by the airline. Please do not get HAWB. Not applicable for pets arriving as accompanied baggage
  • Flight details of the pet in cluding MAWB number, flight number, date & time of arrival at SGN airport
  • Copy of the pet owner’s air ticket from origin country to Vietnam with arrival day and time in Vietnam
  • Pet owner’s contact details in Vietnam (name, phone number, email address & delivery address in Vietnam)

Notes:

  • Copies of required documents and flight details should be scanned and emailed at least 2-3 days before the pet arrives at SGN airport for pre-registration with Regional Animal Health Office in Vietnam
  • Original documents must accompany with the pets on the airplane

SGN Arrivals – Pets arriving After 20:00 may not be cleared by customs on day of arrival. In these in stances Pets will remain in their travel Kennels in a room at the Cargo Warehouse until customs can clear the following morning.

No Quarantine Facilities – If Paperwork is in error or pets do not meet entry criteria there is no Animal Reception center or Quarantine facilities. Pets will be kept at the cargo warehouse in original travel kennels until a solution is found or a flight booked back to Originating county.

Identification and microchip

ISO microchip is preferred.

Rabies and vaccinations

Must be more than 30 days and less than one year before import into Vietnam.

Rabies vaccine valid for 3 years is acceptable.

MUST have RABIES - at least 30days before import to Vietnam

ADVISED to have DHPPi+L / FVRCP at least one month before import to Vietnam

Health certificate and permits

Government health certificate must be valid when the dogs & cats arrive in Vietnam.

Import permit is not required for 1 or 2 pets arriving in Vietnam.

Manifested Cargo – Current Status – Import permit is impossible to obtain at this time.

In the case of more than 2 pets arriving as Manifested Cargo To simplify matters, it is advisable to consign the pets under 2 or more AWBs (maximum 2 pets per AWB). Will need rabies vaccination certificate.

Quarantine

Quarantine for import pets into Vietnam is not applicable. There is no Animal Quarantine Station in Vietnam. Pets will be released from the airport of arrival and be delivered to the owners on the same arrival day (It normally takes 3-4 hours for import customs clearance at the airport of arrival).

Other pets / CITES / extra rules

All CITES animals need an import permit from the Government besides the CITES import document.

  • The pets must be taken to the Regional Animal Health Office in Vietnam Or a Local Vet clinic who will provide documents on your behalf 2-3 days before export for health check-up and for the issuance of the Government Health Certificate.
  • Government Health Certificate is issued 1-2 days prior to the pet’s departure from Vietnam.
  • Government Offices are closed Saturday 12:00 - Monday 08:00.
  • Regional Animal Health Office in Vietnam will NOT sign and Stamp a Commercial Annex for travel to EU/UK. They will sign and Stamp a Non-commercial Annex but please check with Import Country for viability.

COVID SPECIFIC

  • Regional Animal Health Office cannot perform Covid_19 Tests on Animals for travel.
  • Regional Animal Health Office will not sign any additional Export paperwork to confirm that the pets are free from covid_19 area.
