Pet import requirements for Monaco

The order matters more than the effort: a rabies vaccination given before the microchip was implanted does not count in most regimes, and a titer test drawn too early restarts a waiting period. The detail

Monaco does NOT have its own EU-approved Border Control Post (BCP) for live animals. Monaco of ficially the Principality of Monaco is a sovereign city-state and microstate on the French Riviera a few kilometers west of the Italian region of Liguria, in Western Europe, on the Mediterranean Sea. 12 weeks & 21 days – See Exemptions.

For non-commercial regulations the owner or a legal representative of the owner is traveling with or within 5 days of the pet and the transport does not in volve purchase, sale or transfer of ownership.

Identification and microchip

Microchip (ISO compatible) required and must be implanted on the same day or prior to the rabies vaccination.

Rabies and vaccinations

All pets must have proof of the current rabies vaccination. When entering from a rabies-free or rabies-controlled country, you will need proof of a current rabies vaccination that was administered after microchip was implanted. If pets first shot, will be able to enter after 21 days. There is no waiting period as long as vaccination was administered after being microchipped and previous vaccinations had not expired. Monaco does not honor 3 years vaccination.

Valid rabies vaccination required at least 21 days prior to entry.

Tests and treatments

Rabies blood test required at least 30 days after rabies vaccination & is required before entering Monaco from a high-rabies country. At least three months must elapse between the blood test and entry into the country.

Dogs and Cats from Peninsular Malaysia should have a declaration stating they were not exposed to pigs within 60 days of import. They will also need to prove they originate from an area where no cases of Nipah have been reported. Your will also need to be tested for antibodies for Nipah Disease within 10 days of import.

A tapeworm treatment is not required.

Two different Types of Health Certificate.

  • Non-Commercial Transport to Monaco from a country Outside of the EU- a licienced veterinarian from the country of exprt must complete and it must be endorsed by the governing agency from the exporting country. This form can be used for Less than 5 animals and is good for 4 months as long as the vaccination document does not expire. From the EU: Have your vet update the EU Pet Passport.
  • Commercial Transport to Monaco from Rabies Controlled County outside the EU: A licensed veterinarian in the exporting country must complete the commercial EU HC within 48 hours. This form is good for transit of 5 pets or less and good for 4 months as long as the rabies vaccination does not expire. Commercial Pets must enter at an approved Border Inspection Post. Notice must be given 24 hours prior to arrival. When Entering from EU Country, your pet must be entered into the TRACES System.

If you are traveling with more than 5 pets that are 6 months or older, unless you are going to a show or competition, you pets must meet the requirements for commercial transport.

Restrictions and banned breeds

Banned Breeds:

The following breeds and there crosses are not permitted import to Monaco without Pedigree Registration:

  • Staffordshire terrier
  • American Staffordshire Terrier (pit-bull)
  • Mastiff (Boerbull)
  • Tosa

The following breeds may enter with restrictions only with Pedigree Papers from an organization recognized by the French Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the owner must be an adult in good standing. The dog must be registered with local authorities and be muzzled in public at all times and is not allowed in public places gathering with children present:

  • Rottweiler
  • Staffordshire Terrier
  • Tosa Inu

Cats from Australia should be accompanied by an of ficial veterinary certification that states the animal has not been resident where Handra disease have been confirmed in the past 60 days.

All pets must be free of evidence of disease when examined at the port of entry to France. Otherwise, will be subject to further examination at your expense. Pets may arrive in the cabin, as checked baggage or as air cargo.

Export notes

All dogs, cats and ferrets leaving Monaco for another EU Member State should be microchipped, vaccinated for rabies (in that order) and wait 21 days before leaving Monaco. If you are planning to take your pet on a trip to a country with a high in cidence of rabies, your veterinarian should do a rabies titer test before you leave Monaco if you intend to return.
