The order matters more than the effort: a rabies vaccination given before the microchip was implanted does not count in most regimes, and a titer test drawn too early restarts a waiting period. Personal pet is an animal that has been owned for at least 6 months and travels with the owner.
Typically, a purchase (transfer of ownership). In some cases, when the owner does not travel within 5 days, but for Switzerland a dispensation could be applied for, so that pet could still travel with the non-commercial EU-health certificate.
For customs purposes the following documents are required:
- It is forbidden to bring dogs with docked tails or ears into the country.
- The only exceptions are for holiday stays or relocation to Liechtenstein.
- When relocating to Liechtenstein, please provide owners passport copy, e-ticket, residency permit and/or work letter stating the relocation.
- When importing a puppy or kitten, an in voice is required and customs taxes are applicable. Import has to be processed through TRACES system.

Rabies and vaccinations
Valid rabies vaccination required at least 21 days old prior to entry into Switzerland / Liechtenstein.
Only rabies is mandatory – other vaccinations are recommended only.
Tests and treatments
Rabies antibody blood test is required from rabies risk countries.
Blood sample taken at least 30 days after valid rabies vaccination. Minimum 3 months waiting time after blood test before import into Liechtenstein.
A tapeworm treatment is not required when entering Liechtenstein from any country.

Customs, agents, and airports
If flying via ZRH, a broker is only needed if arrival is on a commercial EU-health certificate.
Clearance can be challenging for some owner, so it’s recommended to in volve an agent, but it’s not required for non-commercial arrivals.
Closest airport via Zurich-Airport, Switzerland (ZRH)
Pets entering as excess baggage or in cabin can enter all week long (incl. weekends) – remember to have the permit for pets arriving from rabies risk countries.
For pets arriving as cargo, it’s best to limit to Monday to Friday arrivals. The border vet is open on Sunday (limited hours), but customs is closed. While a clearing agent could clear electronically, it’s best to avoid weekend arrivals overall for cargo arrivals.
