For Hungary, start with this checkpoint: Import Permit. Hungary is a landlocked country in central Europe bordered by Slovakia and Austria to the north, Ukraine and Romania to the east, Slovenia to the west, and Croatia and Serbia to the south. Cargo and passenger-pet routings commonly use BUD.

Import requirements

Entering from EU member states and rabies-controlled countries:

Minimum age at import is 15 weeks (rabies vaccination received at 12 weeks of age + 21 days waiting time)

Entering from high-rabies countries:

Minimum age at import is 7 months

21 days waiting time applies after the first rabies vaccination is administered.

Travelling as manifested cargo:

Non-commercial EU health certificate required issued in both English and Hungarian, up to date vaccination book/EU pet passport/proof of vaccination.

Owner must arrive to Hungary within 5 days of pet’s arrival, and must be able to provide evidence of it’s journey (copy of boarding pass, flight ticket, etc.)

Travelling as checked baggage or in cabin:

Pet’s up-to-date vaccination book/proof of vaccination must be with the owner.

Vet-check stamped in vaccination book 1-2 days prior to travel is recommended but not mandatory.

From other EU member countries:

EU pet passport and valid TRACES document must accompany the animal

From countries outside the EU:

Valid veterinary health certificate and up to date vaccination book/EU pet passport/proof of vaccination must accompany the animal (+rabies Titer test if required)

Conditions of dogs and cats entering Hungary from Malaysia:

• the animal has had no contact with pigs during at least the past 60 days prior to export.
• the animal has not lived in a place where cases of Nipah disease have been confirmed during the past 60 days.

• the has been tested with negative a result to an IgG capture ELISA test carried out in a laboratory approve for testing for Nipah disease viruses within 10 days of export.

Conditions of cats entering Hungary from Australia:

• Cats may only enter Hungary from Australia under the condition that they have not lived in areas where cases of Hendra disease have been confirmed during the past 60 days.

Identification and microchip

All dogs, cats and ferrets must be microchipped with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15 digit pet microchip.

Rabies and vaccinations

All dogs, cats and ferrets must have valid vaccination against rabies which was administered after microchip was implanted.

All dogs, cats and ferrets must have proof of a current rabies vaccination administered after a microchip was implanted to enter Hungary.

Pets can only travel to Hungary after 21 days from the first rabies vaccination.

Tests and treatments

Rabies Titer (FAVN) test required if entering from a High rabies country. Titer test can only be administered after a minimum waiting time of 30 days after the primary/booster rabies vaccination, in an EU approved laboratory.

If test results are acceptable (at least or equal to 0,5 IU/ml), 3 calendar months of waiting time applies from the date of the blood sample was taken.

Must be treated against in ternal and external parasites.

Health certificate and permits

EU Veterinary Certificate required. All dogs, cats and ferrets must have proof of a current rabies vaccination administered after a microchip was implanted to enter Hungary.

Commercial import of dogs/cats/ferrets are prohibited from those countries that are not in cluded in Annex VIII

Export notes

All dogs, cats and ferrets leaving Hungary for another EU Member State must be microchipped, vaccinated for rabies (in that order) and wait 21 days before leaving Hungary. If you are planning to take your pet on a trip to a country with a high in cidence of rabies, your veterinarian should do a Blood Titer Test at least 3 months before you leave Hungary. Export permits may be required for non-accompanied transports.
