Pet import requirements for the Faroe Islands

The detail

No quarantines. The *Faroe* or Faeroe *Islands* or simply the *Faroes* are an archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean and an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, between Iceland and Norway in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Import requirements

The import of certain live animals is permitted, subject to specific veterinary requirements administrated by the Faroese Food and Veterinary Agency. The import of some animal species is banned. Dogs and cats must have import permits when arriving in the Faroe Islands. Import permits are filled out and signed by an of ficial veterinarian at the FFVA before being sent to applicants. The courier must verify the import permit before the dog may board the transport vessel from the country of dispatch. If the dog or cat does not have an import permit, the carrier will prohibit the dog from boarding.

Dogs and cats may only be imported by permanent residents in the Faroe Islands, or anyone moving to the Faroe Islands from abroad. The import of dogs or cats for periods of less than three months, in cluding for the purpose of transit to another country, is not permitted. The import of dog fighting breeds to the Faroe Islands is also banned.

Animals must be vaccinated and treated for parasites in compliance with the import requirements. Puppies and kittens must be at least 12 weeks old at the time of vaccination, and may subsequently be imported 4 weeks after vaccination.

When dogs and cats arrive in the Faroe Islands, the Customs Authorities will check their health certificate and send a copy to the Faroese Food and Veterinary Agency.

Identification and microchip

The dog must be microchipped with an ID (ISO-standard 11784). The ID number must be registered in all required documentation.

Rabies and vaccinations

Required (See Import Req.)

No earlier than 1 year and no later than 4 weeks before arrival to the Faroe Islands, the dog must be vaccinated against the following diseases:

• Rabies (lyssa virus)
• Canine distemper (paramyxovirus, CDV)
• Infectious canine hepatitis (adeno virus CAV-I)
• Canine parainfluenza virus in fection (parainfluenzavirus)
• Parvovirus in fection (parvo virus, CPV)
• Leptospirosis

No earlier than 1 year and no later than 4 weeks before arrival to the Faroe Islands, the catmust be vaccinated against the following diseases:

• Rabies (lyssa virus)
• Feline panleukopenia, (parvovirus)
• Feline viral rhinotracheitis (herpesvirus)
• Feline calicivirus (calicivirus)

Tests and treatments

The dog cannot come to the Faroe Islands until 12 weeks have passed since the blood sample for the rabies titre test was taken. The application must be sent at least 6 business days before the scheduled departure for the Faroe Islands.

Faroese Food and Veterinary Authority

Dogs & Cats must be treated against the below mentioned ecto / endoparasites:

• Castor bean tick(Ixodes ricinus)
• Roundworm
• Tapeworm
• Echinococcus granulosus and E. multiocularis
• Mange mites
• Lice and fleas

The treatment against parasites must not be finished earlier than 1 week before the arrival to the Faroe Islands.

Treatments

Dogs must receive treatments for the following

endoparasites and ectoparasites.

• • Roundworm
• • French heartworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum)
• • Tapeworm, in cluding *Echinococcus granulosus *and *E. multilocularis *
• • Scabies
• • Lice
• • Fleas
• • Ixodes ricinus

The treatments must not be older than what is

recommended by the producer when the dog

arrives in the Faroe Islands. Your veterinarian

can offer guidance on this matter.

Health certificate and permits

The health certificate is a certificate from a veterinarian which confirms that the dog is healthy and has received all required treatments against parasites. The health certificate must not be older than 2 days at the time of departure for the Faroe Islands.

To bring dogs, cats or other pets to the Faroe Islands, you must be a resident of Faroe Islands and apply for permission to the Faroe Islands' Food and Veterinary Administration, Heilsufrøðiligu Starvsstovuni, hfs.fo, before bringing them into the country.

To receive an import permit, owners must:

• Send an import permit application to the FFVA (at least 6 business days before the dogs departure from the country of dispatch)
• Pay the processing fee for the application and in clude the payment receipt in the import permit application

• Send a health certificate to the FFVA, hfs@hfs.fo (2 business days before the departure from the country of dispatch) The application form for import permits can be accessed on the FFVA website: www.hfs.fo Owners must use the appropriate application form; sending a copy of the animal’s passport is not sufficient. Owners can apply for an import permit as soon as the dog has been registered with an ID and vaccinated. The application must be sent at least 6 weekdays before the scheduled departure for the Faroe Islands.

Restricted Breeds

It is not permitted to bring pets on holiday trips or temporary stays in the Faroe Islands, in cluding dogs and cats. You can only bring pets to the Faroe Islands if you live in the Faroe Islands, or if you move to the Faroe Islands. Owners without permanent residence in the Faroe Islands cannot bring dogs when travelling to the Faroe Islands.

The following is prohibited:

• To bring dogs when transiting through the Faroe Islands to other countries

• To import dog breeds that pose a threat to people and animals. For a list of these dogs, go to our website, www.hfs.fo.

• To import hybrid breeds (e.g. wolfdogs) regardless of the genetic percentage

Customs, agents, and airports

A customs broker is required for Faroe Islands.

If the owner cannot accompany the dog

throughout the journey, a courier must be assigned to accompany the dog. The courier isthen responsible for the dog until it can behanded over to the owner.

Because the FFVA must receive the health certificate 2 business days before the departure from the country of dispatch, and because the certificate cannot be older than 2 days at the time of departure, departures from the country of dispatch can only take place on the following days:

• Wednesday

• Thursday

• Friday

• Saturday

It is important to keep this in mind regarding festivals and bank holidays. 2 consecutive business days must precede the day of departure.
