The detail

The importer must inform the Veterinary Section of the Agricultural Department on the day that the animal arrival. The Falkland Islands are a self-governing British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean, located about 300 miles east of South America. Import requirements

· Import License issued by the Falkland Islands Government Veterinary

Service.

· Dogs: Rabies, DHLPP, Kennel Cough (Parainfluenza and Bordetella) vaccination is required, not less than 30 days and not more than 12 months prior to the date of export.

Cats: Rabies, Panleucopaenia, Calicivirusand Herpes virus.

· Internal and External Parasite treatment no more than 72 hours prior to the date of export and must be on Export Health Certificate.

· Official Export Health Certificate must be issued, signed, and stamped by the Ministry of Agriculture of the country of origin not more than 72 hours prior to the date of export.

The importation of accompanied and unaccompanied pets is not considered commercial.

Identification and microchip

Pets must be microchipped before vaccinations.

Rabies and vaccinations

Pets must be vaccinated not less than 30 days and not more than 12 months prior to the date of export. Health (OIE), Terrestrial Animal Health Code.

The Dog and/or Cat must be vaccinated not less than 30 days and not more than 12 months prior to the date of export:

DOGS

• Distemper

• Infectious Hepatitis

• Leptospirosis

• Parvovirus

• Kennel Cough (Parainfluenza and Bordetella)

• Rabies

CATS

• Panleucopaenia

• Calicivirus

• Herpes virus

• Rabies

Animals are not valid to travel for 30 days after the date of the last subcutaneous in jection and are not valid to travel for 50 days after the date of the last in tranasal vaccination (dogs). Note that the in tranasal part of the kennel cough vaccine can be given as early as 3 weeks of age. This applies equally to primary courses and booster vaccinations. The in tranasal vaccination against Bordatella bronchiseptica is a live vaccine and animals may shed bacteria for up to 7wks post vaccination.

Tests and treatments

Titer test requirements: A blood sample must be taken from the animal and sent to a reputable Rabies Reference Laboratory to perform the RNATT*/FAVN, and the result must be sent directly to the Veterinary Services prior to issuing an import permit. The test result must show a serum antibody level of at least 0.5 IU/mL. The test must be done not less than one (1) month after vaccination with an approved Rabies Vaccine and Titer test must be available 90 days prior to travelling.

IN THE CASE OF CATS:

The cat must be tested with a negative result within 30 days prior to the date of export and sent the sample to a government approved laboratory:

· PCR test for Feline Leukemia Virus

· ‘Coronavirus Ab test’ for Feline Infectious Peritonitis (coronavirus)

PROGRESSIVE RETINAL ATROPHY (PRA)

In case of entire dogs of breeding age that are destined to work as sheep dogs, the owner/exporter would have to provide, on arrival to the Falkland Islands, a certificate issued under the British Veterinary Association/Kennel Club/International Sheep Dog Society (BVA/KC/ISDS) Eye Scheme stating that the

dog has tested negative for PRA.

Dogs and Cats Must be treated in ternal and external parasites.

· The Dog must be treated against ticks and fleas and treated with Praziquantel, Febantel and Pyrantel no more than 72 hours prior to the date of export.

· The Cat must be treated against ticks and fleas and treated with Praziquantel and Pyrantel no more than 72 hours prior to the date of export.

Health certificate and permits

All animals must have passed the Veterinary Examination and satisfied the provisions of the Veterinary Certificate.

Export Health Certificate must be issued by the country of origin’s governing authority organization not more than 72 hours prior to the date of export. The original Export Health Certificate must accompany the animal(s).

Copies of the Export Health Certificate, vaccinations must be faxed or emailed to the Veterinary Service, Department of Agriculture Falkland Islands immediately following the Veterinary Examination.

No animal may be imported into the Falkland Islands without a current import licence issued by the Department of Agriculture, Falkland Islands.

Applications stating the number of animals, in dividual identification (microchip number), species, breed, age, sex (in cluding the pregnancy status where applicable), the method of transport, the route to be taken and the proposed date of import into the Falkland Islands. Quarantine

The importer must inform the Veterinary Section of the Agricultural Department on the day that the animal arrival.

Dogs and Cats there is a 48 hour house quarantine period imposed on arrival. Also please note that: Following air travel the quarantine period will be subject to Veterinary discretion.

On arrival your pets should be registered with the Veterinary department, who provide services to Government, the farming community and the public.

Restrictions and banned breeds

UK, Australia, New Zealand have of ficial protocols for moving pets to Falklands. All other origin country must be authorized by Veterinary Service, Department of Agriculture, Falkland Islands case by case.

• Pregnant animals may only be transported in the 1st half of the length of their gestation and at the discretion of the exporting veterinarian.
• Animals may not be transported if they have given birth in the last 6 weeks.
• If hire a comfort stop service en route animals may be given a comfort break, if possible, but they must NOT leave the airport or come into contact with any other animal other than those already travelling.

Importing Working Sheep Dogs- Must be examined and found to be free from signs of progressive retinal atrophy prior to export. This test needs to be carried out by a registered veterinary ophthalmologist only in entire male or female dogs of breeding age and destined to work as sheep dogs.

Containers may not be released from the port without a Clearance Certificate. Clearance Certificate will be issued by the Biosecurity Officer on receipt of Health Certificate (copies if necessary) and in voices. Before importing, Contact Biosecurity for in spection appointment. Normal working hours for in spections are Monday to Friday 8:00a to 4:30p unless otherwise arranged with the Biosecurity Officer. Containers should not be open prior to in spection.
