Import requirements

The importation of cats into Nauru requires presentation of an in ternational animal health certificate, attesting that the animals:
- Were examined within 48 hours of shipment, found to be in good health and showed no sign of any in fectious disease.
- Have been effectively vaccinated against feline panleucopaenia in accordance with product's registration at least one month and not more than twelve (12) months before shipment, and feline viral rhinotrachietis/calici virus in accordance with the product's registration at least one month and not more than six (6) months before shipment.
- Have been effectively treated against echinococcosis-hydatidosis, round hook and whip worms in accordance with the products registration within three (3) days of shipment.
- Have been effectively treated against, and found on examination to be visibly free of, all ectoparasites in accordance with the product's registration within three (3) days of shipment.
- Showed no clinical sign of rabies on the day of shipment, and were kept from birth or for six months prior to shipment in the exporting country where no case of rabies was of ficially reported during the two years immediately preceding the importation of the animals concerned.
- For animals originating from a country or part of a country where rabies occurs or is reported to occur or where rabies vaccination is routinely practices must undergo a period of not less than 120 days in an approved quarantine facility recognized by the Republic as rabies free area prior to entry to the Republic.
IMPORTATION OF LIVE ANIMALS
(1) No person shall import a live animal into Nauru unless the Chief Quarantine
Officer has given permission under subsection
(2) A person who in tense to import a live animal into Nauru shall give written notice to the Chief Quarantine Officer at least 14 days before the expected date of arrival of the animal.
(3) A notice under subsection (2) shall contain details of the animal, the conveyance of transportation, the expected date of arrival, and such further details as the Chief Quarantine Officer may require.
(4) Upon receipt of a notice under subsection (2), the Chief Quarantine Officer may, subject to the provisions of the Animals Act 1982-
(a) permit; or
(b) refuse to permit,

A permit granted under subsection (3) may be made subject to such conditions as
are specified in it.

Transport Requirements: Pets must travel as manifested cargo – unless otherwise specified on the Import Permit.
Identification and microchip
The pet should have a microchip for in ternational travel. Microchip should be implanted prior to administering the required rabies booster.
Rabies and vaccinations
Yes, it is a required vaccination. Follow rabies guidelines of Australia. Please provide in formation about when your dog was vaccinated against rabies. Include a valid certificate from the licensed veterinarian who administered the vaccine.
Dogs:
• Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus – at least 1 month & no more than 3 months before departure.
• Rabies – in activated Rabies vaccine given at least 30 days before entry to Nauru (this may be waived if pet is from a Rabies-free country)
Cats:
• Feline Panleucopaenia – at least 1 month & no more than 12 months before departure
• Feline Viral Chinotracheitis & Calici Virus – at least 1 month and no more than 6 months before departure
• Rabies – in activated Rabies vaccine given at least 30 days before entry to Nauru (this may be waived if pet is from a Rabies-free country)
Tests and treatments
No specific test required. Animal must be free of disease and parasites.

• Health Inspection – within 48hrs of departure
• Internal Parasite Treatment against echinococcosis-hydatidosis, roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm – within 3 days of departure
• External Parasite Treatment – within 3 days of departure
CATS:
• Health Inspection – within 48hrs of departure

An Import Permit is required and is valid for 2 months. Import Permits returned to the Licensing Authority upon application to the annual licence to keep the dog or cat on Nauru.

Pets originating from a country (or part of a country) where Rabies occurs &/or Rabies vaccinations are routinely given, must undergo a period of at least 120 days quarantine in an approved facility recognized by the Republic of Nauru as a Rabies Free Area prior to entry to Nauru.

Customs, agents, and airports

Nauru International Airport is the sole airport in the Republic of Nauru. The airport provides service to other island nations via the national airline, Nauru Airlines. The airport code is INU.
Your pet will also need to clear in spection by the Quarantine Officer.
Export notes
EXPORT OF ANIMALS
(1) The Chief Quarantine Officer may –
(a) require that any animals, animal products and similar goods be examined as he
directs prior to export; and
(b) issue a health certificate in respect of any animal, animal product or other goods to
be exported to assist the exporter to meet the quarantine entry requirements of
another country.
(2) A Quarantine Officer may withhold or detain any animal, animal product or similar goods
being exported until such time as he is satisfied that they meet with all or any of the terms
and conditions of the importing country and are of good health and free from disease and
pests.
(3) The issue of a health certificate under this section shall not release the exporter or importer from compliance with any quarantine import law of the country to or through which the animal or animal product are consigned.
Other pets / CITES / extra rules
Nauru is not a member of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
It is advised to check with the Department of Quarantine.
The Republic of Nauru's Animal Welfare Regulations in clude the Animals Act 1982, the Animals (Amendment) Regulations 2008, and the Quarantine Act 1908. These regulations cover the importation, licensing, and care of animals.
The Animals Act of 1982 states that a license must be obtained within 14 days of importing a dog into Nauru.
CARGO IN TRANSIT
(1) A Quarantine Officer may examine any conveyance, cargo, plant, animal or other
goods which is or are in transit through Nauruan waters.
(2) Goods or cargo in transit through Nauru or Nauruan waters shall not be unloaded
from the transporting conveyance unless the Chief Quarantine Officer authorizes their
unloading.
(3) An authorization under subsection (2) may be given with such conditions as the
Chief Quarantine Officer considers necessary.
All exports must meet the destination country requirements in addition to Nauru’s procedure for export.
