Pet import requirements for Fiji
What Fiji asks for before a dog or cat can enter — the microchip, the rabies work, the permit and the paperwork — and how far ahead you need to start. We handle all of it on a move we arrange.
Import rules change, and they change without notice. Last verified 2025-10-02 by the country-profile service Furry Freight uses; profile last updated 2026-02-05. Confirm every requirement with the authority named below, or with us on (424) 421-1650, before you book a flight or start any vet work.
Fiji at a glance
| Requirement | For Fiji |
|---|---|
| Microchip Required | All animals must be identified by a microchip that can be read by an AVID, TROVAN, DESTRON or other ISO – Compatible reader |
| Rabies | Group A – No rabies vaccination required: Australia; Christmas Island; Cook Islands; Federated States of Micronesia; French Polynesia; Kingdom of Tonga; Kiribati Marshall… |
| Rabies antibody test Required | A Brucella Canis blood test must be completed within 30 days prior to the dogs departure |
| Import permit Required | An Import permit is required for pets to travel to Fiji, this will outline the entry requirements |
| Quarantine | Group A Countries The minimum quarantine period is seven days at the government Post-Entry Quarantine Station at Koronivia |
| Minimum age to travel | Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Island Countries: Minimum age 4 months USA and EU: More than 6 months, Rabies Titre test is required at least 4 weeks after the rabies vaccination |
| Customs clearance | Strongly advised |
| Agent at destination | Strongly advised |
Where this fits in the timeline. The order matters more than the effort: a rabies vaccination given before the microchip was implanted does not count in most regimes, and a titer test drawn too early restarts a waiting period. On a move we handle, we check your pet's existing dates against these rules on the free consultation before anything is booked.

Application forms for the import permit can be accessed from *our website* *www.baf.com.fj *or via email: info@baf.com.fj or animalimports@baf.com.fj. Completed application forms can be emailed back to BAF or faxed on (679) 3305043. There is a fee applicable to obtain an import permit and should be paid when lodging the application. It takes the BAF Animal Permits Team approximately 5 working days to process applications for import permits.
Once the applications are processed, BAF will send the applicant an import permit outlining conditions that the applicant needs to meet to allow BAF to determine whether the dog or cat in tended to be imported will pose no risk to other animals or humans in Fiji. Import conditions will differ depending on the country from which the animal is coming from. Import permits also in clude forms that must be completed and certified by a registered or government veterinarian from the country the animals are exported from.
The animal will only be allowed into Fiji when all conditions stipulated in the import are met. All import permits to import live animals (pets) are valid for six months, so the pet must arrive in Fiji within the six months or on the date the permit expires. Pet owners should also ensure that the original import permit is with the animal when it arrives in Fiji. Apply for the import permit well in advance of the animal’s arrival so that you have time to organize tests and obtain test certificates/veterinary certifications that must accompany the animal when it arrives into Fiji.
Contact the Government for more in formation. This can be done by calling the BAF office on +679-3312512 or emailing animalimports@baf.com or info@baf.com. All pets must meet guidelines for import.
All animals entering Fiji will require various treatments and tests prior to leaving country of origin the tests depend on the country. Duration between treatments will be outlined in the permit.

Export notes
In accordance with the Biosecurity Act 2008, all dogs and cats for export require an export health certificate or a veterinary certification from the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF).
Dogs and cats are exported from Fiji under conditions designed to meet the health requirements of each importing country. Import permits may be required for entry of animals into most of the countries while others only require a health certificate or veterinary certificate issued by BAF.
It is the responsibility of the dog/cat owner or exporter to check whether the importing country requires an import permit to be obtained from their national competent authority for a dog/cat to be taken to that country. This can be easily done by visiting the of ficial website of the relevant government authority for the destination country. The owner or exporter is responsible for making sure that the animal(s) comply with the importing country’s requirements at the time of export. This can be accomplished by obtaining necessary assistance from pet handling agents or veterinary clinics. While making arrangements, ensure that importing country’s requirements are well understood and relevant treatments, vaccination and laboratory testing is carried out and documentations properly filled.
The BAF veterinarian has to be notified via email of the export and an appointment has to be made for the final in spection and export certification of the animal. Date and time of the final in spection varies depending on the importing country’s import requirement. Seven (7) days prior to the date of the final in spection, all export documentation that has been completed by a registered veterinarian to gether with any other paperwork (e.g. import permit [if required], vaccination certificates, laboratory test results, in ternal and external parasitic treatment and any other treatment in formation, etc.) must be provided to the BAF veterinarian.
Based on the above-mentioned documentation, the BAF veterinarian will determine whether the animal meets all requirements of the importing country and is suitable for export. The export certificate and BAF health certificate will only be issued once the BAF veterinarian is satisfied that the animal(s) have been prepared in accordance with the importing country’s requirements.
The owner or exporter is responsible for organizing transport and any post-entry quarantine that may be required by the importing country. Also, arrangements must be made by the owner or exporter with airlines for carriage of the animals well in advance. The scheduled departure date determines the timing of the preparation activities and final in spection by the registered veterinarian as well as the appointment time for the issuing of of ficial export documentation by BAF veterinarian. Some airlines require animals to be transported by known agents such as animal logistics companies – please check with your airline.
Animal transport containers must comply with the specifications of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which defines container design, size and construction. The container must be of sufficient size to allow each animal enough space to turn about normally while standing, to stand and sit erect, and to lie in a natural position.
Other pets / CITES / extra rules
Fiji joined CITES in 1997 and implements CITES through the Endangered and Protected Species Act (2002) (EPS Act) and the Endangered and Protected Species Regulations (2003) (EPS Regulations). Refer to CITES depending on species you wish to import / export.
It is advised to contact - *For more in formation, please contact the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji on 3312512 or email: info@baf.com.fj*. However, note that there are breed restrictions and age requirements.
[Protection of Animals Act](https://www.agriculture.gov.fj/documents/legis/Protection of AnimlasAct.pdf)
Request for guide/service dogs to be exempted from Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) requirements and quarantine will have to be submitted to the BAF veterinary section with all correct documentations. These requests are analyzed on a case by case basis.
Fiji is free of deadly diseases like rabies and foot & mouth (FMD) and it is important that we maintain this status. As such, the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) has strict biosecurity controls on import of domesticated animals (dogs and cats) into Fiji to help prevent the in troduction of foreign diseases.
